Houston Texans sign CB Derek Stingley Jr. to 3-year, $90M extension

All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. has agreed to a record three-year, $90 million contract extension with the Houston Texans, making the three-year veteran the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history on an average annual value basis.

Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday that the pact includes $89 million in guarantees; the average annual value surpasses the previous record for cornerbacks, which was set last week by Jaycee Horn, whose four-year, $100 million extension with the Carolina Panthers averages $25 million per season.

Stingley, 23, joined the Texans as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has logged 11 interceptions and 37 passes defensed over the first 37 appearances of his NFL career; and is coming off an All-Pro season in which he totaled 54 combined tackles, 18 passes defensed, five interceptions and four tackles for a loss over 17 starts.

Dodgers’ Mookie Betts to miss 2-game series in Tokyo due to illness

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts will miss their season-opening 2-game series in Tokyo, Japan due to a lingering illness. The Dodgers will face the Chicago Cubs in the first two games of the 2025 MLB regular season Tuesday and Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Monday that the All-Star infielder has lost nearly 15 pounds and needs to rehydrate and gain strength before returning to play. Roberts said: “The thing is when you lose a lot of weight, when you’re dehydrated, that’s what opens a person up to soft-tissue injuries. We’re very mindful of that. So to take the next week, call it, to build him back up, his strength, do some baseball activities to get ready for the home opener.”

Betts, 32, started suffering from flu-like symptoms at the team’s spring training home in Arizona the day before the team left for Japan. Roberts said if the team had known Betts’ illness would linger this long, they wouldn’t have had him travel on the long flight to Japan. Betts participated in workouts during the Dodgers’ first few days in Tokyo, but tired quickly and did not work out with the team Monday. He also did not play in exhibition games against Nippon Professional Baseball teams. He told MLB Network over the weekend: “I’m OK, I’m here. I’m alive. Working to try and get back on the field.”

Betts is making the full-time transition to shortstop this season after playing most of his career in right field and second base; veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas is expected to replace Betts in the Dodgers’ lineup.

Betts is an eight-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner, six-time Gold Glove Award winner, three-time World Series winner and former American League MVP. He appeared in 1,381 games through the first 11 years of his MLB career, hitting .289 with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs over 116 games last season.

Normani engaged to new Pittsburgh Steeler DK Metcalf

Singer Normani, 28, and new Pittsburgh Steeler DeKaylin “DK” Metcalf, 27, are engaged (per Billboard.)

The wide receiver announced the happy news to reporters at a press conference following his recent trade from the Seattle Seahawks to the Pittsburgh Stealers. Metcalf gestured to Normani (off-camera) to encourage her to show off her new engagement ring, saying “Hold that rock up, baby.”

Metcalf later shared that he popped the question one day prior, while both of their families were together in Houston. “It was my sister’s spring break and just thought about getting the whole family together for a big kumbaya and joining our families with the ring.”  Metcalf added he tried to propose last year, but “she’s a singer and her work conflicted with the schedule,” so he “started sending her flowers with a story, and then the last letter on the flower was ‘Will you marry me?’ And she said yes.”

Normani and DK first sparked dating rumors in summer 2023; the couple were set up by Metcalf’s former teammate, QB Russell Wilson, and his famous wife, Ciara.  Ciara wrote on TikTik with a screenshot of the couple revealing their engagement over a video chat: “Love was truly in the air! Now y’all gon be booed up for forever!! This was the best news!”
