Legendary R&B vocalist Roberta Flack has died at the age of 88.

According to a statement from her rep: “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025. She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.”  A formal cause of death was not shared, but the music artist had been navigating ALS since 2022, causing her to lose her ability to sing (per NBC News.)

The Grammy-winning artist, who rose to stardom in the early ’70s with the iconic hit songs “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” started playing piano as a girl and earned herself a Howard University scholarship at just 15 years old. Eventually, she became a teacher, and sang in Washington D.C. clubs before releasing her first album, First Take, in 1969. It included the song “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” which became popular after it appeared in Clint Eastwood’s Play Misty for Me, and earned the singer two Grammy awards.

Flack was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1999, and she later developed the Roberta Flack School of Music for the Bronx’s Hyde Leadership Charter School. Flack was married to jazz musician Steve Novosel from 1966 to 1972, and was the godmother of musician Bernard Wright, who died in May 2022.

Boston Bruins’ Hampus Lindholm likely to miss rest of season with knee injury

Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney announced on Sunday that defenseman Hampus Lindholm is unlikely to return for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Sweeney said the defenseman is expected to have a follow-up exam next week to remove some of the hardware that caused irritation during rehab.

Lindholm, 31, has not played since mid-November after fracturing his patella which required surgery; he sustained the injury after blocking a shot from St. Louis Blues defenseman Justin Faulk in the first period of a game on Nov. 12.  Sweeney said: “As everybody knows he [Lindholm] had a significant knee injury, fractured his patella, had surgery. There was no real definitive timeline, and we were pretty open about that and we didn’t want to peg a timeline on it because of the complexity of the injury. He’s going to have a follow-up next week to remove a little bit of the hardware because it’s created some irritation as he’s going through the rehab. Again, the healing process has gone long, gone well and he’ll have no setbacks moving forward. That being said, it’s going to take a little more time to heal naturally and we don’t want to put a timeline on when he’ll be back to 100 percent.”

Lindholm is in the third season of an eight-year, $52 million contract extension he signed with the Bruins in March of 2022.  Hehad three goals and seven points in 17 games with Boston while averaging 20:51 minutes of ice time before sustaining the injury.

The sixth overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks, Lindholm was traded to Boston on March 19, 2022 in exchange for a first-round pick, two second-round selections, and defencemen Urho Vaakanainen and John Moore. An All-Star in 2022-23, Lindholm has 313 points (73 goals, 240 assists) and a plus-147 rating in 762 career games with the Bruins and Anaheim Ducks (2013-22).

Mikaela Shiffrin wins historic 100th World Cup Race in Alpine skiing

United States alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin reached a historic milestone on Sunday, winning her 100th World Cup race at the slalom event in Sestriere, Italy. Shiffrin, 29, is the first skier — male or female — to achieve triple-digit victories in World Cup races.

Shiffrin — who hit the slopes for the first time since a serious crash in November that left her with severe oblique trauma and a deep puncture wound — was racing in her favored slalom event. She finished 0.61 seconds ahead of Zrinka Ljutic, with Shiffrin’s U.S. teammate, Paula Moltzan, finishing in third.

Additionally, Shiffrin also tied a World Cup record for men and women, as her 155th career top-3 finish matched Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark (she surpassed Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup race wins in March 2023; earlier that same year, Shiffrin overtook Lindsey Vonn’s record 82 World Cup victories for a female skier).

Shiffrin said after the race: “Everybody’s been so nice and so supportive. All of my teammates and competitors and coaches and the whole World Cup and I’m so grateful, thank you. And the fans, thank you so much … I think it’s pretty special to share it with Paula, my teammate. I could hear everybody cheering from the start when she went and I thought, ‘OK, it’s like a day of training, it’s like we just keep pushing,’ and she pushes and I push and I made it achievable.”

Shiffrin’s historic win came nearly three months after she suffered a puncture wound in her left oblique resulting from a crash during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont.  As early as two weeks ago, she withdrew from the World Alpine Skiing Championships in Saalbach, Austria, citing post-traumatic stress disorder from her November crash, posting on Instagram at the time: “Honestly, I really didn’t anticipate experiencing so much of this kind of mental/PTSD struggle in GS from my injury in Killington. Like always, I tried diving into the challenge, hoping to get there by Worlds. I figured my passion and longing to compete would outweigh the mental barriers. Maybe that will be the case over time, but I’m not there yet. Coming to terms with how much fear I have doing an event that I loved so dearly only 2 months ago has been soul-crushing.”

Tina Turner’s ‘Private Dancer’ celebrates 40th anniversary with re-release

Tina Turner’s Grammy-winning comeback album Private Dancer will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its debut with a new box set, set for release on March 21. Turner died in 2023 at the age of 83.

Private Dancer was Turner’s fifth solo album, released in May 1984 after leaving husband and musical partner Ike Turner in the late ’70s. Her abusive marriage to Ike led to one of music’s greatest comeback stories, as Tina reinvented her career in her 40s – and became one of the biggest acts of the 1980’s. Private Dancer went to No. 1 worldwide and won several Grammy Awards, and was followed by sold-out world tours and other hit albums over the next couple of decades.

The five CD and one Blu-ray box set will include B-sides, live tracks and previously unreleased songs from the era. In addition to the music included on the upcoming set, Private Dancer (40th Anniversary Edition) features a Blu-ray with 4K versions of the album’s videos for the hit singles “What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “Better Be Good to Me,” the title track  — all U.S. Top 10 hits. There are also discs of B-sides, single edits and extended versions of the singles, and previously unreleased tracks and non-album singles, such as Turner’s cover of the Temptations’ “Ball of Confusion” that helped launch her comeback.

In addition, an unreleased cuts from Private Dancer, titled “Hot for You Baby,” dropped alongside the announcement of the box set. You can listen to the song – HERE.
