Police investigate ‘suspicious’ deaths of actor Gene Hackman, wife Betsy Arakawa found in their Santa Fe home

Police in Santa Fe, New Mexico say that an investigation is underway after Oscar award-winning actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found dead alongside one of their dogs in their Santa Fe residence.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office said in a statement when news first broke of their death: “On 26 February, 2025, at approximately 1:45pm, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an address on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park where Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and a dog were found deceased.”

Later on Thursday, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the couple were found Wednesday afternoon during a welfare check after their neighbor called and was concerned about their well-being. According to the search warrant affidavit, their deaths were considered “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation, due to all of the circumstances surrounding the scene.”

According to the search warrant: Hackman was found on the floor in the mud room, appearing that he fell suddenly. Arakawa was found lying on her side on the floor in a bathroom, with a space heater near her body Her body showed signs of decomposition with mummification to her hands and feet. On the counter near Arakawa was an opened prescription bottle, with pills scattered. A German shepherd was found dead about 10 to 15 feet from Arakawa, with two other dogs were found alive – one was near Arakawa, and the other was located outside.

The document further stated that the Santa Fe City Fire Department found no signs of a possible carbon monoxide leak or poisoning; if there was carbon monoxide at the scene, it could have vented out of the home through the open front door before responders arrived. Chris Ramirez, spokesperson for the New Mexico medical investigator’s office, said that the medical examiner’s reports with the final cause of death “generally take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to generate.”

Hackman is a two-time Academy Award winner who was awarded Oscars for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in William Friedkin’s 1971 thriller The French Connection; and for Best Supporting Actor for playing Little Bill Daggett in Clint Eastwood’s 1992 film, Unforgiven.

Hackman retired from acting in 2004, and moved to Sante Fe with his second wife, Arakawa.  The actor shared three children from his 30-year marriage with Faye Maltese (they divorced in 1986).

Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker releases new statement denying sexual misconduct allegations

Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker has released a new statement in which he offered an apology while maintaining that he did not act inappropriately while receiving professional bodywork treatment.

The Baltimore Banner had previously reported that 16 massage therapists from eight spas and wellness centers in the Baltimore area have accused Tucker of inappropriate sexual behavior.   When the accusations against Tucker became public late last month, the five-time All-Pro released a statement saying he has never received any complaints from a massage therapist or been told he was not welcome at a spa or other place of business.

In a new statement provided by his publicist to Outkick, Tucker called the allegations “shocking and heart-breaking,” adding: “It devastates me to know that anyone I have worked with would not have felt respected and valued as a professional, but more importantly as a person, and to anyone who has felt otherwise, I am sorry. I want you to know I am committed to ensuring that everyone I interact with continues to feel that I respect them and care about them as a human being … I maintain I did not act inappropriately at any point before, during, or after a professional bodywork treatment session, nor have I ever been told I am unwelcome at any massage therapy provider. These claims are simply not true. Throughout the last four weeks, I have spent countless hours replaying every interaction I have had with bodywork professionals over the last thirteen years. I can assure whoever is reading this that I have never intended to disrespect anyone, cross any boundary, or make anyone feel uncomfortable in any way whatsoever.”

Tucker’s wife Amanda also addressed the accusations for the first time, saying: “The false allegations against Justin have caused so much hurt to our family. I believe my husband, and I love and support him fully.”

On Tuesday, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta called the number of sexual misconduct allegations made against Tucker “serious and concerning”. According to DeCosta, the Ravens were unaware of any allegations against Tucker until the Baltimore Banner contacted them about the investigative piece on Tucker that was published Jan. 30.  He indicated the team will wait for the NFL to finish its investigation before determining Tucker’s future in Baltimore.

Investigators for the NFL have been in Baltimore speaking with some of the women who have accused Tucker of sexual misconduct. Ravens coach John Harbaugh said: “We’ve all got questions, but nobody knows exactly what happened. So, let’s see where the review takes us.”

Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter, the potential top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, will not need to undergo surgery on his foot, per the advice of his doctors. Tests revealed Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine that Carter had sustained a stress reaction in his right foot, and was considering surgery.
