Pistons’ Jaden Ivey suffers broken fibula in left leg after collision with Magic’s Cole Anthony

Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey suffered a broken fibula in his left leg during Pistons’ 105-96 win over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. Per ESPN, the 22-year-old Ivey will miss at least most of the remainder of the season.

Ivey suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Magic after Cade Cunningham missed a 3-pointer, and both Ivey and Magic guard Cole Anthony chased after the ball. As Ivey bent down to try and pick it up, Anthony dove for it and crashed into his leg. Ivey’s left foot and ankle got trapped under Anthony’s body, while his lower leg and knee bent from the force of the collision. Ivey fell to the floor in pain, and medical personnel worked quickly to stabilize his leg before he was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled off the court. Ivey, who has started all 30 games in which he has appeared this season, exited the game with 22 points on 5-for-6 shooting from behind-the-arc.

Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said after the game: “It’s tough. It’s tough on all of us. No better teammate, person than J.I. No one who cares more about this thing than him. It’s tough to see …At the heart of this team, and what we’ve tried to preach all year since we’ve been here is togetherness. If one guy goes down, you don’t want to let that guy down, so everybody else has to step up. Again, it’s the emotions, it’s the human aspect of it, but I thought our guys did a really good job of just sticking together and getting it done.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, the team plans to be cautious with Ivey’s rehabilitation, but it is not ruling out a return this season depending on Detroit’s play and potential postseason run.

Morgan Wallen drops new music video ‘Smile’

Morgan Wallen surprised fans with the release of the brand-new track, “Smile,” dropped at midnight EST on New Year’s Eve.

Directed by Justin Clough, the 5-minute visual clip shows Wallen taking the stage of a fictional late-night talk show on New Year’s Eve and leaving a sullen-looking woman behind in his dressing room. He goes off script and performs “Smile,” directed to Wallen’s girlfriend (whom he apparently has not seen look happy for a while.) The song ends with her watching him on stage, and the woman walking away without smiling. Wallen goes back to his dressing room, but the woman isn’t there.

“Smile” was originally teased on Wallen’s Instagram and TikTok; co-written by Wallen, Rocky Block, John Byron, Ernest Keith Smith, Ryan Vojtesak and Luis Witkiewitz, the song is a continuation of a theme from Wallen’s previous releases, “Lies Lies Lies” and “Love Somebody”. “Lies Lies Lies” recently became Wallen’s 16th No. 1 at country radio, while “Love Somebody” debuted at No. 1  and became his first solo song to debut at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 100 chart upon release.

Lily James and Pierce Brosnan to star in ‘Cliffhanger’ reboot

A reboot of Sylvester Stallone’s action classic “Cliffhanger” is currently in production in Munich, Germany, and the Dolemite Mountains in Italy, with Lily James and Pierce Brosnan starring as father/daughter mountain climbing team Ray and Naomi Cooper.

The reboot was originally announced last year to feature Stallone returning in his original role, according to Deadline. The cast now only includes Brosnan, James, Tiger Free, Franz Rogowski, Shubham Saraf, Assaad Bouab, Suzy Bemba and Bruno Gouery.

In the new film reboot, Naomi (James)  is haunted by a past climbing accident (the same trauma that haunted Sylvester Stallone’s character in the 1993 film). Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame postponed after New Orleans terror attack

The Sugar Bowl was postponed from New Year’s Day, and will now take place on Thursday, January 2nd. Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams told ABC News Wednesday afternoon that the college football game between Georgia and Notre Dame, set to kick off Jan. 1 at 7:45 p.m. CT at the Ceasar’s Superdome in New Orleans, was being postponed in the wake of the terror-attack early Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street that left at least 15 dead and dozens injured.

The FBI said the suspect was killed after allegedly opening fire on police officers with an assault rifle, with the incident being deemed ‘an act of terrorism.’  Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said in a statement, according to local affiliate WJCL: “The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.”

The University of Georgia wrote in a statement on X: “We are horrified and saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans. University personnel are working to determine if any UGA students, faculty, staff, alumni or fans were among the victims. We offer our deepest condolences to all the victims and their families, and we stand in solidarity with the New Orleans community.”

Rev. Robert A. Dowd, president of Notre Dame, said in a statement: “Our prayers are with the family members and loved ones of all those impacted by the terrible attack in New Orleans early this morning. We also pray for all those injured and extend our deepest gratitude to the brave first responders who risked their lives to protect others. To be in solidarity with those who suffer is to exemplify the spirit of Notre Dame. Today, we are in solidarity with all those impacted by this tragedy.”

Chiefs to start backup QB Carson Wentz in place on Patrick Mahomes in Week 18 vs. Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs will rest quarterback Patrick Mahomes and other players in their starting lineup for Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs (15-1) have locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid confirmed Wednesday that veteran QB Carson Wentz will start in place of Mahomes, but said he “hasn’t finalized” which other key starters may sit out the finale.

Denver will secure its first playoff berth in nearly a decade with a win over the Chiefs. If Kansas City wins, Denver could still make the playoffs if both the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins each lose their final game. Broncos head coach Sean Payton said in a conference call on Monday about the potential changes to the Chiefs’ lineup:  “I don’t know that it changes the game plan because the scheme is still the same.I think you have to approach it like you’re seeing starters at these positions. Obviously, NFL rosters are — it’s not like you have a college roster. I’ve been in this position before on the other side of it. I think you’re looking at the scheme relative to the game plan, and then planning on seeing the player that you’re watching on film – and if someone else is in that spot, then so be it.”

The Chiefs beat the Broncos 16-14  in their first matchup this season. When he was with the Philadelphia Eagles, Wentz threw four touchdowns and notched a win in his only game against the Broncos (back in November 2017), with the Eagles winning 51-23.

Justin Baldoni files $250M lawsuit against The New York Times over Blake Lively article

Justin Baldoni has sued The New York Times after it reported that he and his public relations team were behind a smear campaign against his It Ends With Us co-star Blake Likely.

The NY Times published the article titled “‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine” on Saturday, Dec. 21 – shortly after Lively filed an 80-page complaint with the California Civil Rights Department against Baldoni, including allegations that Baldoni sexually harassed her and developed a retaliatory public smear campaign against her. Lively alleges that Baldoni, alongside his publicist Jennifer Abel and crisis firm TAG PR’s Melissa Nathan, was attempting to manipulate social media and work alongside the press to “destroy” her reputation.

As obtained by PEOPLE, the 87-page complaint – filed on Tuesday, Dec 31 – lists Baldoni and a group of nine other plaintiffs (including his production company Wayfarer Studios, and It Ends With Us producers Jamey Heath, Steve Sarowitz, along with Jed Wallace, and publicists Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel), who are suing the Times for $250 million. Baldoni and his associates allege libel, false light invasion of privacy, promissory fraud and breach of implied-in-fact contract, and accuse the Times of using “‘cherry-picked’ and altered communications stripped of necessary context and deliberately spliced to mislead” in the article.

Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, said in a statement: “In this vicious smear campaign fully orchestrated by Blake Lively and her team, the New York Times cowered to the wants and whims of two powerful ‘untouchable’ Hollywood elites, disregarding journalistic practices and ethics once befitting of the revered publication by using doctored and manipulated texts and intentionally omitting texts which dispute their chosen PR narrative. In doing so, they pre-determined the outcome of their story, and aided and abetted their own devastating PR smear campaign designed to revitalize Lively’s self-induced floundering public image and counter the organic groundswell of criticism amongst the online public.”

In response to the lawsuit, the New York Times defended its article as “meticulously and responsibly reported,” with a spokesperson saying that the publication plans to “vigorously” defend against Baldoni’s lawsuit: “the role of an independent news organization is to follow the facts where they lead. Our story was meticulously and responsibly reported. It was based on a review of thousands of pages of original documents, including the text messages and emails that we quote accurately and at length in the article. To date, Wayfarer Studios, Mr. Baldoni, the other subjects of the article and their representatives have not pointed to a single error. We published their full statement in response to the allegations in the article as well.”

Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora & John Kim join live-action ‘Voltron’ movie

Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora and John Kim have been cast in Amazon MGM Studios’ Voltron movie, joining previously-announced stars Daniel Quinn-Toye and Henry Cavill.

The “Voltron” television franchise – adapted from several Japanese anime television series by Toei Animation – follows a team of space explorers who pilot a giant super robot. The franchise has spawned several American series including Netflix’s eight-season “Voltron: Legendary Defender.”

While plot details are under wraps, director Rawson Marshall Thurber shared a video message with fans during VoltCon in which he shared: “I want to make sure that we stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron. In this film, we’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world, but we’re going to stay true to … those iconic elements that you love, that I love. And I’m so excited to share it with you.”

Thurber is directing the film from a script he wrote with Ellen Shanman; he most recently wrote and directed Netflix’s 2021 action flick “Red Notice” starring Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and 2018’s “Skyscraper,” which also starred Johnson.
