Denver Broncos RB Tyler Badie carted off field during game vs. Jets with back injury

Denver Broncos running back Tyler Badie was carted off the sidelines and placed on a backboard by medical personne between the first and second quarters of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.  The Broncos went on to win against the Jets, 10-9.

Badie was taken to the team’s locker room on a cart at the start of the second quarter against the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The Broncos initially announced Badie had a back injury and said his return was questionable, before later ruling him out.

After taking a massive tackle from the back from Jets linebacker Quincy Williams on a third down, Badie fumbled but was able to walk to the sideline on his own (it appears that Williams’ helmet struck Badie in the lower back during the play). Shortly thereafter he appeared to collapse to the ground, and was seen receiving medical attention while on one knee.  After a few minutes a backboard was brought out, and Badie was strapped down and carted off the field

Badie spent all of the 2023 season and the first three weeks of this season on the Broncos’ practice squad, but had been promoted to the active roster this week. He entered the game with 86 yards on 10 carries.

Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence out 4-8 weeks with foot injury

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Dallas Cowboys will likely send DeMarcus Lawrence to IR after suffering a Lisfranc injury to his right foot. Lawrence is looking at a potential return in November, if his recovery goes as planned.

The injury to Lawrence took place during the Cowboys 20-15 win over the New York Giants on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium in NJ.  Lawrence went down in the third quarter while trying to chase down Giants quarterback Daniel Jone, landing awkwardly on his right foot while doing so.  The defensive end eventually went to the sidelines and left the game, where he was ruled out.  Before leaving the game, Lawrence had two total tackles (he has 14 total tackles and three sacks this season, his 11th with the Cowboys).

Luckily for Lawrence and the Cowboy, he will not need to undergo surgery as the bones in his foot were not displaced. The Cowboys play the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions the next two weeks before their bye week on Oct. 20th.

Former Minnesota Vikings QB Tommy Kramer reveals dementia diagnosis

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer has been diagnosed with dementia and stated he has been given two to 10 years to live.

Kramer, 69, shared the news on social media, and cited Brett Favre’s revelation a day prior that he has Parkinson’s disease as part of the reason for divulging his own diagnosis. Kramer wrote: “With Brett Favre’s announcement [Tuesday], I feel it’s best I let everyone know that I was diagnosed with dementia just over a year ago at the NFL Cleveland Clinic.”

Kramer said his doctors told him at his one-year checkup that the dementia hasn’t advanced, and noted he has stopped consuming alcohol to cope with it: “Doctors say I could have anywhere from 2 to 10 years. Just had my year check-up and it hasn’t advanced, and I’ve been sober for almost a year now, which will definitely help. Please, no sympathy. I’ve lived a great life and wouldn’t change a thing. Nobody wanted to win more than me and I never gave up, and that’s exactly how I’m going to battle this … Football is the life we chose to live and sometimes stuff like this can happen. I’m grateful to the NFL for the opportunity and am glad they are trying to do things to protect today’s players. Financially, I’m fine, but I know there are players out there who I played with that need all the help they can get. Unfortunately for me, the NFL will only try to help out with any of my medical bills and therapy what my personal insurance won’t cover. I’m hoping to bring some awareness so the NFL will be able to help others. It’s still all about the fans for me, as long as I’m able, I’m going to continue to be out there and travel to the small towns which I love most and meet the fans. Thank you for all the support and always remember, ‘We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.’”

Kramer, a native of San Antonio, Texas, was drafted in the first round out of Rice by the Vikings in 1977. Kramer played 13 of his 14 seasons in the NFL with the Vikings, where he became the starter in 1979 (the only season in which he played all 16 games). He was given the nickname “Two Minute Tommy” for his late-game success, and made the Pro Bowl after leading the league in passer rating in 1986. Kramer spent his final season in 1990 with the New Orleans Saints, ending his career having appeared in 129 NFL games. He ranks second in Vikings history in passing yards 24,775 and wins for a starting quarterback (54), trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton.

Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose retiring from league after 16-year career

Former NBA MVP Derrick Rose announced on Thursday that he is retiring from the NBA after a 16-year career. Rose announced his decision on social media and also took out full-page ads in the local newspapers of the six NBA cities he played in to thank those fan-bases — Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Detroit and Memphis.

Rose, 35, shared with ESPN: “Knowing that I gave my all to the game, I feel confident in my decision. Basketball was just the beginning for me. Now, it’s important that I give my all to my family — they deserve that.”

Rose wrote in his announcement: “Thank you, my first love. You believed in me through the highs and the lows, my constant when everything else seemed uncertain. You showed me what love truly meant. You gave me a gift, our time together, one that I will cherish for the rest of my days. You told me it’s OK to say goodbye, reassuring me that you’ll always be a part of me, no matter where life takes me.”

Rose arrived in the league as the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 2008 draft, where he spent eight of his 16 years in the NBA.  Rose also played for the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies. Rose was named Rookie of the Year in 2008-09, and became league MVP in 2010-11, when he averaged a career-high 25 points per game, along with 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per appearance.

Shortly after his MVP year, Rose’s career was derailed by injuries. An ACL tear resulted in missing the entire 2012-13 season, and the three-time All-Star also missed the majority of the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot-3 point guard averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game over 24 appearances last season for the Grizzlies. He was set to make $3.4 million in 2024-25, the final year of his contract with the franchise, but was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday (who granted Rose’s request to let him out of the final year of his contract).

Over 723 career appearances, Rose averaged 17.4 points, 5.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds, including 518 starts.

Hoda Kotb announces she is leaving NBC’s ‘Today’ show

NBC’s Today show co-anchor Hoda Kotb announced she is leaving the show after five years as co-anchor, and nearly three decades at NBC. Kotb is the co-anchor of Today alongside Savannah Guthrie, and also the co-host of Today’s fourth hour alongside Jenna Bush Hager.  Kotb will stay in her current role until the beginning of 2025, and will remain with NBC in some capacity beyond leaving Today.

The 60-year-old journalist and broadcaster made the announcement Thursday in a letter to Today staff, which the show published online. Kotb wrote in part: “As I write this, my heart is all over the map. I know I’m making the right decision, but it’s a painful one. And you all are the reason why. They say two things can be right at the same time, and I’m feeling that so deeply right now. I love you and it’s time for me to leave the show. My broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie. I will miss you all desperately, but I’m ready and excited.”Happily and gratefully, I plan to remain a part of the NBC family, the longest work relationship I’ve been lucky enough to hold close to my heart. I’ll be around. How could I not? Family is family and you all will always be a part of mine.”

Kotb also announced the news on-air during Thursday morning’s broadcast, surrounded by her colleagues, including Savannah Guthrie, Jenna Bush Hager, and Al Roker.  Kotb noted her daughters, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5, as motivation for the decision, sharing: “I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60, and to try something new. This is the right time for me to move on.”

Kotb has co-anchored Today with Guthrie, 52, since early 2018; making history as the first-ever pair of female co-hosts of Today.  Kotb has hosted the Today show’s fourth-hour broadcast at 10 a.m. since September 2007. She was joined by co-host Kathie Lee Gifford in April 2008, and Bush-Hager later took on the co-hosting role in August 2019 (following Gifford’s departure).
