Jaafar Jackson introduced as Michael Jackson in first-look photo from biopic ‘Michael’

Lionsgate and Universal Pictures are sharing a first-look photo for the Michael Jackson biopic ‘Michael,’ featuring Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the late pop star.  A post on X read: “Your first look at #MichaelMovie. Starring Jaafar Jackson – in theaters April 2025. Photograph by the renowned photographer Kevin Mazur, who documented Michael’s final rehearsal, and is now the first to photograph Jaafar in character as Michael.”

Michael is directed by Antoine Fuqua and is produced by Branca, John McClain and the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. The photo shared on social media depicts Michael Jackson (Jaafar Jackson) performing “Man in the Mirror” on his Dangerous tour, which ran from 1992 to 1993. Photographer Kevin Mazur, who documented Michael Jackson’s final rehearsal, shot the image. Mazur said in a statement: “When I arrived on my first day on the set of this movie, I was so excited — it was like the first time I went on tour to shoot Michael Jackson. When I walked onto the set, I felt like I’d gone back in time and I was walking into the stadium to shoot the tour. Seeing Jaafar perform, I thought, ‘Wow, it is Michael.’ The way he looks and acts, his mannerisms, everything — he’s Michael Jackson. For anyone who didn’t have the chance to see Michael perform live during his lifetime — this is how it was.”

Michael will give “a riveting and honest portrayal” of the life and career of Michael Jackson, who died at age 50 in 2009. Producer Graham King added: “With Jaafar, every look, every note, every dance move is Michael. He embodies Michael in a way that no other actor could.” The cast also includes Colman Domingo as Michael’s father, Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as John Branca, the attorney who shepherded Michael’s career.

2 juveniles detained as police say ‘dispute between several people’ led to shooting at Chiefs Super Bowl parade

Authorities said on Thursday that two of the three people detained after the deadly shooting following Wednesday’s parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win were identified as juveniles. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves shared that the preliminary findings from the investigation found that the shooting doesn’t have any connection to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism, instead appearing to stem from a ‘dispute between several people.’  Graves said no charges have been filed as of Thursday, and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing, noting “This is still under investigation. We do have 24 hours until we either have to file charges or release them.” Three people in total were detained, including one suspect was arrested after being chased by police shortly after the shots were fired. Several firearms has been recovered, Graves said. but authorities haven’t identified any of the suspects at this time.

At least one person was killed and over 20 people, including young children and teens, were wounded in the shooting near Union Station at the conclusion of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade Wednesday. The person who was killed in the shooting has been identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, 43, a local radio host. At least 22 other people were wounded in the shooting, with Kansas City Fire Department Chief Ross Grundyson sharing that eight were in critical condition, seven in serious condition and six had minor injuries. Graves said Thursday that the people injured in the shooting ranged between the ages of 8 and 47 years old, and half of the victims were under the age of 16.

Detroit Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart arrested for punching Phoenix Suns’ Drew Eubanks before game

Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart was arrested and charged with assault after a pregame incident with Phoenix Suns power forward Drew Eubanks, in which Stewart allegedly “sucker punched” Eubanks in the parking lot of Footprint Center in Phoenix. The Phoenix Police Department said in a release that the fight broke out in the parking lot area of Footprint Center in Phoenix around 4:45 p.m. local time. Stewart was issued a citation by the Phoenix Police Department and subsequently was released.

Eubanks suffered a minor injury from the punch but played in his team’s 116–100 win Wednesday night, recording six points, six rebounds, two steals and one block. Stewart didn’t appear in the game, having already been listed as out due to an ankle injury.

When asked about the incident after the game, Eubanks said: “Just walking in, and words were said and got sucker-punched and security stepped in, and that was it .. Clearly you see what he does, how he acts on the court, so it wasn’t surprising.”  This isn’t Stewart’s first run-in with an opponent; he was involved in an altercation with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and was ejected in November 2021. “

The Suns issued a statement regarding the incident, which read: “The attack on Drew Eubanks was unprovoked, and acts of violence such as this are unacceptable. We unequivocally support Drew, and will continue to work with local law enforcement and the NBA.”

Pistons coach Monty Williams, who coached the previous four seasons in Phoenix, said he took issue with the Suns’ statement: “I think that is irresponsible for them to do that when you really don’t know, because two sides are giving their story. I think until you find out everything, you can’t make those statements. I heard about that and I just thought that did not need to happen. I think there is a time for information to be gathered and then you can make a statement. For me, it’s let’s get all the information. The league will do its due diligence, and it’ll come up with something. It’s just one of those situations that we just have to wait and see.”

Disney’s ‘Moana’ sequel debuting in theaters this November

Disney Studios are going forward with an animated sequel to the 2016 film Moana that will hit theaters Nov. 27. The sequel is in addition to the live-action remake of Moana starring Dwayne Johnson.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news, revealing that the film was initially developed as a TV series, before becoming a movie. “We were impressed by what we saw, and knew it deserved a theatrical release,” said Iger, adding that the film crossed 1 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+ in 2023.

The original Moana was voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho, a young woman who goes on an adventure against the wishes of her father, the chief of the Polynesian island of Motunui. Along the way, she teams up with Maui, a demigod of the wind and sea voiced by Dwayne Johnson. Johnson and Cravalho are expected to reprise their roles in the sequel film. Moana grossed $643.3 million globally, and it received Oscar nominations for best animated feature and best song for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go.”

Dave Derrick Jr., who worked on the original film as a story board artist, will direct the Moana sequel, with Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina writing the film music.
