NY Giants trade DL Leonard Williams to Seattle Seahawks for two draft picks

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that the NY Giants are finalizing a trade sending veteran defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2024 second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick. This is the first trade the Giants have made ahead of the 4 p.m. Oct. 31 trade deadline.

According to NFL Insider’s Connor Hughes, the 29-year-old Williams was unlikely to re-sign to stay in New York for the 2024 season, as he is in the final year of his contract. New York will be eating “most” of the remaining money on Williams’ base salary this year (he is owed $10 million for the remainder of the season).

Williams was originally drafted by the Jets with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 draft out of USC, but joined the Giants in a deal ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 28, 2019, for a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-round pick. Former GM Dave Gettleman signed Williams to a three-year, $63 million deal (45 million guaranteed) in 2021.

In 61 games with the Giants, Williams had 22.5 sacks with 72 QB hits and 27 tackles for loss. He also forced four fumbles and recovered four fumbles while deflecting six passes. This season Williams had 1.5 sacks and five QB hits in eight games this season.

Jon Bon Jovi named MusiCares’ 2024 Person of the Year

Jon Bon Jovi will be honored as the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year at the annual benefit gala, to be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024 — two nights before the 66th annual Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena.

Laura Segura, executive director of MusiCares, said in a statement: “MusiCares is thrilled to honor Jon Bon Jovi at the 2024 Person of the Year Gala. His remarkable contributions to rock and roll have not only left an indelible mark on the music industry, but also in the hearts of countless fans around the world. Furthermore, his long-standing commitment to serving food-insecure and unhoused individuals inspires us all. We’re looking forward to celebrating him and the many ways he has made a difference in this world.”

In addition to his musical achievements, Jon Bon Jovi is being recognized for his philanthropic work. In 2006, he established the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, which is dedicated to disrupting the cycle of hunger, poverty and homelessness. The MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony is one of the marquee events featuring during Grammy Week. It includes a cocktail reception, followed by a dinner and concert featuring other artists paying tribute to the honoree. At 61, Bon Jovi youngest solo honoree since Don Henley received the honor at age 59 in 2007. He is also the second New Jersey native to receive the honor, following Bruce Springsteen in 2013.

Bon Jovi said in a statement: “I’m truly humbled to be this year’s MusiCares honoree. MusiCares’ work with music professionals is vitally important in creating much-needed support and wellness programs that cultivate a healthier and more vibrant community for us all. Philanthropic work has been a cornerstone of my life and has always run in tandem to my music career and achievements. Nearly two decades ago when I formed the JBJ Soul Foundation and JBJ Soul Kitchens, I saw firsthand and continue to see today the impact of charitable community-based work. I know this for sure: helping one’s community is helping one’s self.”

NY Giants QB Tyrod Taylor, TE Darren Waller injured in loss against NY Jets

The New York Giants suffered more than just a 13-10 OT loss to the NY Jets on Sunday — quarterback Tyrod Taylor and tight end Darren Waller both left in the first half against the New York Jets on Sunday with injuries.

After Taylor was ruled out with a rib injury, the team announced he was taken to a hospital for further evaluation. The veteran quarterback was running to his right and raised his right arm to pass when the ball slipped out of his hand and was tackled for a sack by Quinton Jefferson and CJ Mosley. After remaining down for a few minutes as he was checked by trainers, Taylor was able to jog to the Giants’ sideline, though he later took a knee in pain before heading straight to the locker room.

Meanwhile, Waller injured his hamstring early in the second quarter after a 4-yard catch on third-and-5, after which the team announced he would not return. Waller was limited all week in practice with a hamstring injury.

Taylor was replaced by undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito. Taylor started his third straight game for Daniel Jones, who is dealing with a neck injury. Meanwhile TE Daniel Bellinger, who was a starter as a rookie last season, stepped in for Waller after his exit.

Vikings QB Kirk Cousins reportedly suffers Achilles tear against Green Bay

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins left Sunday’s 24-10 win over the Packers midway through the fourth quarter, with Ian Rapoport from NFL Network, posting on X that Cousins suffered a torn Achilles. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said the team was “fearing an Achilles injury” for Cousins, and a subsequent MRI will be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

The play in which the injury to Cousins occurred took place with 9 minutes, 50 seconds remaining with the Vikings holding a 24-10 lead. As Cousins stepped up in the pocket on a third-down dropback, his right leg buckled and he was sacked. Cousins managed to stand up on his own but hopped off the field while holding his right leg in the air.

The 35-year-old Cousins has missed only one NFL start for health reasons in his career; he was replaced by rookie quarterback Jaren Hall. Veteran backup Nick Mullens is on injured reserve because of a back injury. Cousins had completed 23 of 31 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns before being removed from the game.

Cousins is set to become a free agent after the season, agreeing to table negotiations with the Vikings on a contract extension last spring. Cousins entered Week 8 ranked second in the NFL in passing yards and first in touchdown passes.
