Take a look at Keri Russell in the Netflix series ‘The Diplomat’

Netflix shared a first-look photo of their upcoming new drama series The Diplomat, featuring Keri Russell.  The streaming service tweeted the photo with the caption: “Keri Russell stars in The Diplomat, a new series created by Debora Cahn (Homeland, The West Wing), premiering April 20. She plays a career diplomat who lands a high-profile job she’s unsuited for, with seismic implications for her marriage and political future — “

Russell plays Kate Wyler, the new U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. Wyler must handle international crises and build alliances while also navigating her rocky marriage to her husband and fellow diplomat, Hal (Rufus Sewell).

The Diplomat is created and executive produced by Debora Cahn (writer and producer of ‘Homeland’, ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.). Cahn said in a statement: “‘The Diplomat’ is a show about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships. It’s hard to keep a relationship going, be it a marriage or a military alliance. We change, the world changes, and yet we want these relationships to go on forever … It’s a show about a bunch of good people doing their best to keep their global and personal partnerships intact without killing each other. In the world of diplomacy, you’re dealing with a lot of rule-bound, protocol-driven behavior, but underneath all that, these are people who sweat, and spill coffee on their clothes, and forget the name of the person they’re talking to. All of that is always bubbling under the grandeur and majesty of working with heads of state.”

The Diplomat premieres April 20 on Netflix.

Producer Steven Spielberg bringing ‘Smash’ musical to Broadway

A stage musical adaptation of the NBC series “Smash” is heading to Broadway, expected to debut during the 2024-2025 season.  The new stage musical will be based on the NBC series of the same name, which aired for two seasons from 2012-2013.

Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron, who produced the original TV series, will serve as lead producers on the musical. Theater veteran Susan Stroman (“The Producers”) is directing the production, with a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Some Like It Hot,” Hairspray,” “Mary Poppins Returns”), who wrote “Let Me Be Your Star” and dozens of more songs for the television show, many of which will be used in the musical. Additional new material will be added to the Broadway production; additional details, including the cast, have yet to be announced.

Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee and Christian Borle starred in “Smash,” which was created by Theresa Rebeck.  The stage version (like the TV version) will follow the process of mounting the musical “Bombshell,” about the life of Marilyn Monroe; however, producers say the Broadway adaptation will “depart liberally from the series.”

Mavericks’ Luka Dončić facing one-game suspension after 16th technical foul

Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Dončić is facing a one-game suspension after being called for his 16th technical foul of the season during Sunday’s loss to the Charlotte Hornets. Dončić was called for a technical with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter for arguing a no-call after missing a shot on a drive to the basket.

Players automatically get a one-game suspension after 16 technical fouls each season, and for every two technicals thereafter. Dončić will serve the suspension Monday night when the Mavs face the Indiana Pacers on the road, unless the league office rescinds the technical. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said he didn’t think the technical was warranted and that it should be rescinded.  Dončić narrowly avoided a suspension the prior two years, finishing each of those seasons with 15 technical fouls. He had a technical rescinded before last year’s regular-season finale.

After the game, crew chief Kevin Scott said that Dončić used “a profanity directed at the officials in protest to a no-call that was correctly judged in postgame video review.”  Sunday’s technical foul comes two days after Dončić was fined by the league for rubbing his fingers together (in an apparent reference to money) while staring down a ref during last week’s loss to the Warriors.

Dallas fell to 36-39 after the loss Sunday – their second straight defeat against the Hornets. Kidd said: “It’s unfortunate that we let these two games go, and we have to figure out a way to stop the bleeding.”

LeBron James returns after 13-game absence in Lakers loss to Bulls

LeBron James made his return on Sunday after a foot injury forced him to miss 13 games with the Lakers. Despite his return Los Angeles’ three-game winning streak came to an end with a 118-108 defeat to the Chicago Bulls. James finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes

Less than an hour before tipoff, the Lakers announced that James would be available to play, after testing his foot in pregame warmups. However, James was not part of the Lakers starting lineup instead coming off the bench for just the second time in his NBA career (1,680 games counting the playoffs) and the first time since 2007.

James’ injury occurred on Feb. 26 vs. the Dallas Mavericks, where the Lakers trailed by as many as 27 points in the game. James played through the injury to help the Lakers complete the comeback, finishing with 26 points, eight rebounds and three assists — but had been sidelined ever since.

The Lakers have gone 8-5 without James, rising to No. 8. in the Western Conference standings after Friday’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. After the loss to the Bulls, however, L.A. is back under .500 at 37-38, dropping down to No. 9.

Actor Jonathan Majors arrested in NYC following domestic dispute

Actor Jonathan Majors, who currently stars in “Creed III” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” was arrested on Saturday in New York City, accused of a domestic dispute. Majors plays the villain Kang in “Quantumania,” and in “Creed III” he plays Damian “Diamond Dame” Anderson who goes up against Michael B. Jordan’s “Adonis Creed.”

NYPD officers were dispatched to a 911 call from an apartment in the Chelsea neighborhood at 11:14 a.m., where a preliminary investigation determined there had been a “domestic dispute” involving Majors, 33, and a 30-year-old woman, who told officers she had been assaulted. According to TMZlaw enforcement on the scene identified the woman as Majors’ girlfriend, who alleged that the couple got into a dispute in a taxi while returning home from a bar in Brooklyn.  The altercation escalated, with Majors allegedly slapping the victim in the face and placing his hands on her neck to choke her.  The woman was transported to a hospital with minor head and neck injuries in stable condition, and Majors was arrested at the scene.

Majors attorney, Priya Chaudhry, is expecting “all charges will be dropped imminently” in the assault case. Chaudhry maintained in a statement shared on Sunday that the actor is “completely innocent and is probably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows … We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently. This evidence includes video footage from the vehicle where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations … The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon.”

A judge released Majors without bail at his Saturday night arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court. Prosecutors charged the actor with misdemeanor assault, aggravated harassment, attempted assault and harassment. Majors is due back in court in May.
