Tom Brady reveals plans to begin Fox Broadcasting gig in Fall 2024

Just days after announcing his retirement from the NFL, Tom Brady shared that he is taking a break for one year from any job ‘related to football’, and plans to begin his broadcasting gig with Fox in Fall 2024.

In an interview with future Fox colleague Colin Cowherd on “The Herd,” Brady confirmed he met with Fox executives last week and plans to take the next 18 months to focus on other aspects of his life before making his broadcasting debut. Brady told Cowherd: “Decompression is important. You’re on this really crazy treadmill/hamster wheel for a long time, loving the journey and loving the moment, but at the same time there’s a daily fight. I think for me, I want to be great at what I do and even talking last week with the people at Fox Sports and the leadership there allowing me to start my Fox opportunity in the fall of 2024 is something that’s great for me. So I’ll take some time to really learn, become great at what I want to do and become great at thinking about the opportunity and making sure I don’t rush into anything.

Brady and Fox agreed to a 10-year, $375 million deal last summer, which would have seen Brady take over as the network’s lead NFL analyst following his retirement. The deal was tentative on the condition that Brady hang up his jersey permanently; which he did when he announced last week that he was retiring “for good.”

Kyrie Irving traded to Dallas Mavericks from Brooklyn Nets

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.  The Athletic’s Shams Charania tweeted: “The Brooklyn Nets are trading Kyrie Irving to the Dallas Mavericks for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round and multiple second-round picks.” The Mavericks traded Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and draft equity to complete the deal, according to reports. The Nets also reportedly sent Markieff Morris to Dallas in the trade.

An eight-time NBA All-Star, Irving requested a trade from the Nets on Friday. With the Mavericks, Irving will play alongside four-time NBA All-Star Luka Doncic. The 30-year-old Irving has averaged 27.7 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game in 40 games this season, helping the Nets to a 32-20 record.

Earlier this season, Irving was embroiled in controversy after he posted a link to a documentary on Twitter that contained anti-Semitic messages. After he initially defended the tweet and refused to apologize, Irving was  suspended for eight games in November. Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai said he was “disappointed” in Irving’s actions, and Nike later cut ties with him as well. Subsequently after Irving later issued several apologies to the Jewish community and met with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, his suspension was lifted.

Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry out indefinitely with leg injury

The Golden State Warriors announced on Sunday that Stephen Curry has been ruled out indefinitely after suffering partial tears to his superior tibiofibular ligaments and interosseous membrane, as well as a lower leg contusion. An official timeline for Curry’s return will be announced at a later date, but sources say the injuries are expected to keep him out for multiple weeks.  Head coach Steve Kerr said of Curry on Sunday: “He’s going to come back this season and hopefully sooner rather than later.”  Curry missed 11 games earlier this season due to a left shoulder subluxation; and he missed 18 games last season.

Curry suffered the injury on Saturday night during the Warriors’ 119-113 win over the Dallas Mavericks. Curry was trying to defend a drive by Mavericks guard McKinley Wright IV during the third quarter when the two appeared to knock knees. Curry’s leg buckled inward and he left the game to head to the locker room.

Additionally, Curry will likely miss the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, which is set to be held on Feb. 19 in Salt Lake City. Potential injury replacements include Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker, Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards and Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox.

Syndicated talk show ‘Dr. Phil’ ending after 21 seasons

The syndicated talk series ‘Dr. Phil’, hosted by Dr. Phil McGraw, is ending after 21 seasons.  The program, launched in September 2002, was co-created by McGraw and Oprah Winfrey. The 72-year-old McGraw said in a statement. “With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children. This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do.”

McGraw began his television career on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ in the 1990s before launching his own series. Dr. Phil His started its run in second place in ratings (only behind Winfrey’s show at the time) and has remained among the top two most-watched shows in daytime television throughout the 21 seasons.

Dr. Phil will air new episodes until the current season ends this spring, and the show’s distributor, CBS Media Ventures, will also keep reruns on the air for the 2023-2024 season. CBS Media Ventures president Steve LoCascio said in a statement: “Phil is a valued partner and member of the CBS/King World family, and while his show may be ending after 21 years, I’m happy to say our relationship is not. Phil changed the daytime landscape as the force behind one of the most popular talk shows ever on daytime TV. We plan to be in the ‘Dr. Phil’ business with the library for years to come and welcome opportunities to work together in the future.”
