Raiders QB Derek Carr says thank you and goodbye to fans

In a letter he posted Thursday afternoon on social media, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr thanked teammates and coaches and said goodbye to fans, adding that he “looks forward” to joining a new team.

Carr wrote on Instagram and Twitter: “Raider Nation it breaks my heart I didn’t get an opportunity to say goodbye in person. We certainly have been on a roller coaster in our nine years together. From the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful and appreciative of the years of support you gave to my family and me.  We had our share of both heart breaking moments and thrilling game winning drives, and it always felt like you were there next to me. It’s especially hard to say goodbye because I can honestly say that I gave you everything I had, every single day, in season, and in the off-season. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but I hope that I was able to leave you with more than a few great memories as Raider fans….I once said that if I’m not a Raider, I would rather be at home and I meant that, but I never envisioned it ending this way. That fire burning inside of me to win a championship still rages. A fire no man can extinguish; only God. So I look forward to a new city and a new team who, no matter the circumstance, will get everything I have. Winning a championship is what I’ve always wanted and what I will continue to work toward.”

The 31-year-old Carr joined the franchise as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, making the Pro Bowl in three of his first four seasons. He went 63-79 in 142 starts for the Raiders, completing 64.8% of his throws for 35,222 yards, 217 touchdowns and 99 interceptions over his nine seasons with the AFC West franchise.

Carr went 10-7 as a starter, with a career-high 4,804 yards, 23 scores and 14 interceptions in 17 starts in 2021 and led the Raiders to the 2021-22 playoffs.  Carr signed a three-year, $121.5 million contract extension in April, but the franchise can release him next month while taking a salary cap hit of just $5.6 million. If the team doesn’t move on from Carr, his 2023 salary will jump to more than $30 million next season and to more than $40 million in 2024 and 2025.

Dodgers release pitcher Trevor Bauer after lengthy suspension

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Thursday they have released right-hander Trevor Bauer. Bauer, 31, was designated for assignment last Friday, giving Los Angeles seven days to trade, release, or waive him.  A release was inevitable because finding a trade partner was close to impossible, and no team would claim Bauer on waivers or absorb the $22.5 million owed him. The Dodgers are still responsible for the $22.5 million remaining on Bauer’s contract, and now that he’s been released Bauer is free to sign with any team.

An arbitrator reduced Bauer’s suspension under MLB’s domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy from 324 games to 194 games, which is still the longest suspension in the policy’s history. The Dodgers opted to cut ties and remove Bauer from the organization.

Bauer has not pitched since June 28, 2021, following accusations that he had assaulted a woman. The Pasadena Police Dept. announced the following February that he would not face criminal charges, but MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred suspended Bauer last April.

Bauer signed a three-year contract worth $102 million with the Dodgers prior to the 2021 season. The arbitrator who reduced his suspension ruled that he will play without pay for the first 50 games of this season, reducing his 2023 salary from $32 million to approximately $22.5 million.

Lisa Marie Presley dies at age 54

Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis Presley’s only child, died Thursday at the age of 54. A family statement read: “Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.” Priscilla also confirmed the news in a statement to PEOPLE Thursday evening: “It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us. She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

Presley was hospitalized Thursday morning after suffering cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas, Calif. She was rushed to a hospital after paramedics performed CPR. According to TMZ, Presley’s ex-husband, Danny Keough, had been living with her and administered CPR before paramedics arrived. Presley’s death comes just two days after she attended the Golden Globes with her mother Priscilla Presley, which saw Austin Butler win the Golden Globe for his starring role in “Elvis” as best lead actor in a drama.

Presley’s parents divorced when she was 5, and her famous father died when she was 9. She inherited Elvis’s mansion, Graceland, and then inherited Presley’s entire estate when she turned 25. She sold 85% of the estate, which had an estimated value of $100 million when she inherited it, in 2005 to Industrial Media, but kept control of Graceland.

In October 1988, Lisa Marie married musician Danny Keough with whom she welcomed two children: daughter Riley in 1989 and son Benjamin in 1992. After five and a half years of marriage, the couple divorced in May 1994. Less than a month later, she married singer Michael Jackson; however two years later, Lisa Marie and Jackson ended their relationship. Presley married actor Nicolas Cage in 2002 in a secret ceremony in Hawaii on the 25th anniversary of Elvis’ death. However, less than four months after their wedding, the pair announced their split. Her fourth marriage came in 2006 to Michael Lockwood, with whom Lisa Marie welcomed twin daughters, Harper and Finley, in 2008. Lisa Marie filed for divorce from Lockwood in June 2016, which was finalized in 2021. In 2020, Presley’s son Benjamin Keough died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 27.

Lisa Marie is survived by her mother, Priscilla Presley, her three daughters and a half-brother, Navarone Garibaldi.

Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin released from Buffalo hospital to continue recovery at home

The Buffalo Bills announced on Wednesday that safety Damar Hamlin, who has been under medical care for more than a week after an on-field cardiac arrest, was released from a Buffalo hospital and allowed to go home. The Bills said in a statement that Hamlin was discharged Wednesday from Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute.

Hamlin’s heart stopped and he was resuscitated in the first quarter of the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 2 in Cincinnati. He was then taken by ambulance to the Cincinnati Medical Center, released Monday from the intensive care unit and admitted to the Buffalo hospital.

The Bills said Hamlin underwent a comprehensive medical evaluation and a series of cardiac, neurological and vascular testing Tuesday. Dr. Jamie Nadler, a critical care physician and the chief quality officer at Kaleida Health, said in a news release:  “We have completed a series of tests and evaluations, and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged to continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills.”

The Bills placed Hamlin on injured reserve last week, ending his 2022-23 season. They will host the Miami Dolphins in the wild-card round of the playoffs at 1 p.m. EST Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.
