San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell expected to miss two months with MCL sprain

San Francisco running back Elijah Mitchell suffered a sprained MCL during the 49ers Week 1 loss against the Bears that will sideline him for around two months. Mitchell’s injury came during the first half of Sunday’s game against Chicago. While it was initially thought to be a minor injury, an MRI following the game gave Mitchell a diagnosis.

Before exiting the game on Sunday, Mitchell had six carries for 41 yards. With Mitchell out for a significant amount of time, the team will be expecting more from its other running backs — Jeff Wilson, third-round rookie Tyrion Davis-Price and undrafted rookie Jordan Mason. If Mitchell winds up being out for the expected two months, his return would probably come in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers or Week 11 against the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City.

The Bears defeated the 49ers with a score of 19-10 on Sunday. San Francisco will host the Seattle Seahawks for Week 2.

Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner to miss 4 months due to shoulder surgery

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman told reporters on Monday that quarterback Tyler Buchner will have shoulder surgery Tuesday, and is expected to miss four months – which means he will miss the rest of the season.

Buchner completed 18 of 32 passes for 201 yards, scored two rushing touchdowns and had two interceptions in Notre Dame’s 26-21 loss to Marshall on Saturday in Notre Dame, Ind.  He sustained the left shoulder injury in the fourth quarter. Freeman told reporters: “He ended up getting a high-grade AC sprain in his non-throwing shoulder. He will have surgery tomorrow. The expected recovery time is about four months. We can all do the math. That puts us somewhere in mid-January. Drew Pyne will be our starter.”

Buchner completed 28 of 50 passes for 378 yards and two interceptions through two games this season for the Fighting Irish (0-2). The sophomore quarterback also ran for 62 yards, in addition to his two rushing touchdowns, and completed 60% of his throws for 298 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in 10 games in 2021.

Notre Dame will host California (2-0) at 2:30 p.m. EDT Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt suspected to have torn pectoral muscle

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Pittsburgh Steelers are said to suspect that their star linebacker TJ Watt tore a pectoral muscle against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.  It appeared Watt knew the injury was serious when he was leaving the field; in video footage, Watt can be seen pointing to the left side of his chest and saying, “I tore it.”  Watt is expected to undergo scans on Monday to confirm the diagnosis. The Steelers rely heavily on the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, so if Watt were to miss significant play time, it would be devastating to the team.

Watt left the game with six solo tackles, a sack and an interception. The Steelers defeated the Bengals 23-20 in OT.
