Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver issued 1-year suspension, $10M fine from NBA for workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies

On Tuesday, the NBA announced that it has suspended Robert Sarver, the managing partner of the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury, and fined him $10 million after conducting an independent investigation into racist and sexist conduct. The investigation included interviews with 70 former and current Suns employees who said Sarver created a “toxic and sometimes hostile workplace” over his 17 years owning the team and included charges of racism and sexism.

The NBA conducted its own investigation, during which it interviewed 320 individuals connected with the team and evaluated 80,000 documents that included emails, text messages and videos. The NBA said in part: “based on the findings of the independent investigation, including those related to Mr. Sarver’s workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies, the NBA today has taken the following actions: Mr. Sarver is suspended from the Suns/Mercury organization for a period of one year.”

Sarver, a successful Arizona real estate investor and co-founder of Southwest Value Partners, was also fined $10 million by the league. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement: “The statements and conduct described in the findings of the independent investigation are troubling and disappointing. We believe the outcome is the right one, taking into account all the facts, circumstances and context brought to light by the comprehensive investigation of this 18-year period and our commitment to upholding proper standards in NBA workplaces.”

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says QB Dak Prescott may avoid injured reserve despite thumb injury

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that quarterback Dak Prescott won’t be going on injured reserve, despite having injured his right thumb (his throwing hand) in Dallas’ 19-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1.  Jones said that Dallas won’t be placing Prescott on the injured reserve list because the team believes he can play within the next four games (if a player is placed on the injured reserve list, they must miss a minimum of four games). Prescott had surgery on the thumb on his throwing hand Monday.

Jones said optimistically: “I think what we’re going to do here is we won’t be putting him on IR, which means we want him to be in consideration for playing within the next four games.”  He added, “Dak has a real chance to be back out there throwing the ball pretty quick.”

If Jones were to return in four games, he would face the reigning Super Bowl champion Rams on Oct. 9.

Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny to portray Elvis and Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s film “Priscilla”

Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny will portray Elvis and Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, “Elvis and Me.”  The project, titled “Priscilla,” will be written and directed by Coppola and distributed by A24 in North America. Coppola has previously worked with A24 on “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.”

The A24 film’s press release notes: “Sofia Coppola wrote and will direct the feature film ‘Priscilla’ based on the memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley. Published in 1985, Presley’s intimate account of her life with Elvis became a New York Times Bestseller and an international sensation.” Priscilla met Elvis Presley in 1959 when she was 14 years old and he was serving in the army in Germany. She moved to the United States to be with him in 1963, and the pair were married from 1967 until 1973.  In her memoir, Priscilla describes her relationship with Elvis, their marriage and daughter, his infidelity, their eventual divorce, and his death.

“Priscilla” comes on the heels of Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 feature “Elvis,” which featured Austin Butler as Elvis, and Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla.  Elordi stars in “Euphoria” and “The Kissing Booth,” while Spaeny is best known for her roles in “Mare of Easttown” and “Bad Times at the El Royale.”  Per the press release, filming for this project has yet to begin, and further details on the movie’s plot, cast, and release date have not been announced.

Lewis Capaldi shares the music video for ‘Forget Me’

Lewis Capaldi has shared the video for his new song “Forget Me”, which pays homage to WHAM!’s classic single, “Club Tropicana.” Capaldi set out to duplicate the 1983 video, shot for shot, with director Louis Bhose at the helm (Bhose also directed Capaldi’s video for his single “Grace.”)

Director Bhose said in a press release: “You hear a sad song and you expect a sad video. There’s catharsis in that. But to go in the other direction completely felt more in line with the Lewis that walked onstage at Glastonbury in full Noel Gallagher getup The performance is classic Capaldi: ‘yeah, no bother, just singing this song with a cocktail in my hand. I’m fine, not thinking about my ex, here at Club Tropicana.’”

In the first 24 hours since it was released, ‘Forget Me’ has racked up more than 2 million streams.
Capaldi shared in a statement: “‘Forget Me’ is a song that’s so dear to my heart, and I definitely feel like it’s my best tune yet. It’s about a break-up I went through where after a year, the only real contact I had with my ex was seeing her ‘post-me’ life play out on her Instagram. I was at a point where I was feeling pretty miserable, and she seemed like she was moving on and having the best time, thriving, and I hated it. It seemed unfair to me that she appeared happy while I was hurting, and I was fearful she might have forgotten about me completely, so I wrote a song about it.”
