Former Memphis top recruit and current Easter Michigan player Emoni Bates is arrested on gun charges during traffic stop

Emoni Bates, a second-year player who transferred to Eastern Michigan this offseason after one-season with Memphis, was arrested and taken into custody Sunday night on felony gun charges. Police say that Bates was pulled over on a routine traffic stop after failing to stop at an intersection, where they discovered a firearm.

Bates faces two felony charges: one for carrying a concealed weapon and another for altering ID marks on a weapon. Bates’ attorney Steve Haney told ESPN that his client was driving a borrowed car that had a gun inside when he was pulled over, and he was subsequently booked into jail on gun charges. Eastern Michigan said in a statement to ESPN: “We are aware of a situation involving one of our student athletes. Eastern Michigan University takes all allegations very seriously. We are working to gather more details and will have further comment when more information is available.”

Bates was once ranked as the No. 1 prospect in his high school class and widely viewed as one of the best basketball prospects in the world.  He committed to Michigan State before signing with Memphis, where in 18 games he averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds. After his freshman season at Memphis, Bates opted this summer to return closer to home by playing for Eastern Michigan.

Las Vegas Aces defeat Connecticut Suns to win their first WNBA Championship

The Las Vegas Aces defeated the Connecticut Sun with a score of 78-71 on Sunday to win their first WNBA championship. The loss for the No. 3 seeded Sun was a disappointing finish for the franchise, who has the second most wins in WNBA history, but has never won the championship.

The Aces fought off rallies by the Sun before clinching the title in the fourth game of the best-of-five series. 29-year-old Chelsea Gray led the Aces with 20 points, five rebounds and six assists on 9 of 13 from the field, and was named the most valuable player of the finals. Gray said emotionally: “My teammates are awesome. I worked so hard for this.”  The Aces finished with the best regular-season record in two of the past three seasons. The Aces’ postseason reflected the regular-season dominance that led them to tie Chicago for the best record in the league.

The Aces hired Becky Hammon, who had been an assistant with the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, after Bill Laimbeer – who had been the Aces’ coach for four years – stepped down before the season. Hammon took over a team led by A’ja Wilson, who won the league’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2020. Wilson, 26, also won her second MVP Award this season, and was named the defensive player of the year.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ WR Mike Evans and New Orleans Saints’ CB Marshon Lattimore are both ejected after brawl during Sunday’s game

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans and New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore were both ejected from Sunday’s game for fighting. Evans and Lattimore were in the center of a bench-clearing brawl that occurred in the fourth quarter of a game between the Saints and Buccaneers at the Caesars Superdome.

Tampa Bay were preparing to punt after Tom Brady’s pass to Scotty Miller on third-and-5 fell incomplete with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter. Lattimore was covering Miller on the play and appeared to wave his arm at Brady in a dismissive manner as Brady walked by him after the play.  Brady turned to look at Lattimore and started to approach him as Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette ran over to shove Lattimore. Lattimore shoved Fournette back as both Saints safety Marcus Maye and Evans got involved. Evans turned around and ran onto the field, shoving Lattimore and knocking him to the ground. Maye then went after Evans as Lattimore got up to approach Evans again. Maye and Evans hit the ground together, and Lattimore ended up on the ground under Evans and Maye.  The brawl continued to escalate and Lattimore stood up, yelling as teammates tried to pull him back.  After everyone cooled down, Saints defensive end and team captain Cameron Jordan walked Lattimore off the field with an arm around his shoulder.

Lattimore and Evans were both ejected after a quick discussion by officials. As Evans left the field, he appeared to shove a cameraman and gave his gloves to two fans.

The Buccaneers went on to defeat the Saints 20-10.
