Ben Stiller and Sean Penn among those permanently banned from Russia in new round of sanctions

Actors Sean Penn and Ben Stiller have been officially and permanently banned from entering Russia, along with 23 other “members of the US Congress, high-ranking officials, representatives of the business and expert communities, as well as cultural figures.”

The personal sanctions were announced in a statement by Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to what it calls “the ever-expanding personal sanctions by the G. Biden Administration against Russian citizens.”  The sanctions also target Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Thea Kendler, as well as several other officials in the department of trade.

Penn had traveled to Ukraine to make a documentary for Vice as Russia was planning its invasion of the sovereign nation. In February, he issued the following statement: “Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind. President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have risen as historic symbols of courage and principle. Ukraine is the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost.”

Stiller traveled to Ukraine in June as part of the UN Refugee Agency to meet people “who have been impacted by the war” and hear “how it’s changed their lives.”  Stiller said as part of a video message posted by the UN Refugee Agency that “war and violence are devastating people all over the world. Nobody chooses to flee their home. Seeking safety is a right, and it needs to be upheld for every person.”

Tiffany Haddish says she ‘deeply regrets’ comedy sketch that led to child sex abuse lawsuit

Tiffany Haddish posted a message on Instagram addressing the sexual misconduct allegations recently lodged against her and her fellow comedian Aries Spears.  The 42-year-old Haddish wrote: “I know people have a bunch of questions. I get it. I’m right there with you. Unfortunately, because there is an ongoing legal case, there’s very little that I can say right now. But, clearly, while this sketch was intended to be comedic, it wasn’t funny at all — and I deeply regret having agreed to act in it. I really look forward to being able to share a lot more about this situation as soon as I can.”

A lawsuit filed last week in Los Angeles accused Haddish and Spears of recruiting underage children for the purpose of filming sexually explicit comedy skits several years ago. The plaintiffs, who are now 14 and 22, said the experiences made them “physically, emotionally, and mentally uncomfortable.” They also said they felt they had been “groomed” when they were young and are now “traumatized for life.”

Haddish and Spears have denied all allegations through their attorneys.

Mitchell Trubisky named Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting QB over Kenny Pickett

The Pittsburgh Steelers have named Mitchell Trubisky their starting quarterback for Week 1’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday that “Mitch Trubisky is our starting quarterback and our captain,” citing Trubisky’s “franchise quarterback experience” as one of the reasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers named him their starter for 2022. The Steelers listed Kenny Pickett, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, as their second-string quarterback.

Tomlin told reporters: “Man, we’re just really comfortable with what Mitch has shown us…He’s a guy that came to us with franchise quarterback experience, if you will. He’s comfortable in those shoes. He’s been the focal point of a football team and an organization before, he’s had success in doing so.” He added: “Like I mentioned when we acquired him, he took the Bears to the playoffs two out of four years. He was a winning record as a starting quarterback. Those things were attractive to us.”

The Steelers signed Trubisky as a free agent in March. He spent his first four seasons with the Chicago Bears, and completed just 6 of 8 passes for 75 yards and an interception in six games last season for the Buffalo Bills. Trubisky completed 66.6% of his throws for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions en route to a Pro Bowl selection during his best season in 2018. He went 11-3 as a starter that season. Trubisky went 14-10 over his final two seasons in Chicago.

The Steelers will host the New England Patriots in their season opener at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Philadelphia 76ers sign center Montrezl Harrell to 2-year, $5.2M deal

Free agent center Montrezl Harrell has signed a two-year, $5.2 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers finalized the agreement, which includes a player option for the 2023-24 season, with Harrell’s agent, Derrick Powell, on Tuesday.

Sixers star James Harden played a significant role in recruiting Harrell to the Sixers, selling him on a reunion of their time together with the Houston Rockets.   The 28-year-old Harrell averaged 11.4 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Charlotte Hornets a season ago. He’s played for Houston, the Clippers, Lakers, Washington and Charlotte in seven NBA season since leaving Louisville.

Harrell joins the Sixers shortly after a felony charge of marijuana trafficking was reduced to a misdemeanor possession charge in a Madison County (Kentucky) courthouse last week. Harrell pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge, which will be expunged from his record after 12 months if he gets in no further legal trouble.

The Osbournes return to reality TV with upcoming show ‘Home to Roost’

Ozzy Osbourne and family are returning to TV with a reality BBC docu-series, which will follow the life of the iconic Osbourne family. The show, entitled Home to Roost, will depict the everyday life of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne as they start over back in the U.K., returning to their family home in the town of Buckinghamshire. The couple’s children, daughter Kelly and son Jack, will also be featured in the show to assist their parents with readjusting to life back across the pond.

Home to Roost will consist of a 10-part series on the BBC, and will premiere in 2023 — though an exact release date has not been announced. The BBC said in a statement: “The series will follow the Osbournes as they celebrate one of their most important years yet — with everything from Sharon’s 70th birthday to Kelly’s soon-to-be-born baby, Ozzy’s tour, and of course the big move itself. This will be a genuine portrait, showing Sharon and Ozzy as they face up to illness and the challenges of getting older, but with the usual Osbourne eccentricities, humor, warmth and love.”

The announcement of the new series comes shortly after Ozzy said in an interview that he and Sharon were moving back to the U.K., citing the rising levels of gun violence within the United States. Ozzy and Sharon have both insisted that his health was not a factor in deciding to leave the U.S.

Home to Roost comes two decades after the family first broke onto the reality TV scene with their hit MTV series The Osbournes. The show, which premiered on MTV in 2002, became one of the highest-rated reality series in the network’s history.

Justin Bieber cancels remainder of his ‘Justice World Tour’ to prioritize his physical and mental health

On Tuesday, Justin Bieber told fans in a statement posted on his Instagram story that he was calling off the remainder of his Justice World Tour to prioritize his health.

He wrote: “Earlier this year, I went public about my battle with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, where my face was partly paralyzed. As the result of this illness, I was not able to complete the North American leg of the Justice Tour. After resting and consulting with my doctors, family and team, I went to Europe in an effort to continue with the tour. I performed six live shows, but it took a real toll on me. This past weekend, I performed at Rock in Rio and I gave everything I have to the people in Brazil. After getting off stage, the exhaustion overtook me.”  Bieber said he knew in that moment that he had to “make my health the priority,” adding, “I’m going to take a break from touring for the time being. I will be okay, but I need time to rest and get better. Thank you for your prayers and support throughout all of this.”

Bieber shared news of his health issues in June and said of his remaining U.S. tour dates at the time, “I’m just physically not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious.” Bieber was able to restart his tour the following month, performing at Italy’s Lucca Summer festival.  According to the Mayo Clinic, Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the chickenpox virus, which continues to lay dormant in a person after initial infection and can reactivate as a shingles rash. The syndrome is caused when a shingles rash, which can be painful, breaks out near one’s ear. It can trigger facial paralysis and hearing loss.
