‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ wins the weekend box office with over $20.1M in domestic earnings

‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’ opened with $20.1 million-plus in earnings in North American box office to win the weekend box office, easily beating the weekend’s other new film, ‘Beast.’ Crunchyroll, the distributor of the Japanese movie, says the sequel to 2018’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly is scoring the best global opening ever for an anime film. Dragon Ball Super: Broly debuted to $9.8 million domestically from roughly 1,200 theaters.

Dragon Ball Super 2 is the 21st feature film in the long-running ‘Dragon Ball’ universe and a sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The CGI-animated martial arts fantasy — directed by Tetsuro Kodama from a story by series creator Akira Toriyama, and produced by Toei Animation — is playing in more than 3,100 cinemas in North America, including 324 IMAX locations.

Taking second place at the box office was Beast with a modest $11.6 million from 3,743 theaters, a disappointing start for the Universal release starring Idris Elba.  Elsewhere at the box office, Sony’s Bullet Train fell to No. 3; and Top Gun: Maverick took the No. 4 spot to reach $700 million in earnings at the domestic box office.

Philadelphia Phillies’ closer Corey Knebel is done for season with tear in his right shoulder capsule

Philadelphia Phillies closer Corey Knebel is reportedly done for the remainder of the 2022 MLB season.

Knebel, who exited Aug. 14’s game against the New York Mets in the middle of his outing, suffered a tear in his right shoulder capsule, thus placing him on the 60-day injured list on Sunday. The Athletic reported that Knebel will head to Texas for stem-cell treatment to try and avoid getting surgery. The 30-year-old Knebel, set to become a free agent this offseason, finishes out the 2022 season with a 3.43 ERA, 4.47 FIP, 5.6 BB/9, and an 8.3 K/9.

Philadelphia just lost Seranthony Domínguez to the injured list with triceps soreness; so the timing of Knebel’s injury could not have been worse. The Phillies bullpen has been solid, however, with a 3.66 ERA since June 1 – ranking 10th in MLB.

Fans boo Yankees management as New York retires All-Star right fielder Paul O’Neill’s No. 21 jersey

On Sunday, the NY Yankees retired All-Star right fielder Paul O’Neill’s No. 21 jersey, making him the 23rd player or manager in the franchise to earn the honor. Since O’Neill retired after the 2001 World Series, the only New York player to wear No. 21 was reliever LaTroy Hawkins at the opening of the 2008 season, but he switched back not too long after the season started.

Due to the fact that O’Neill is not vaccinated against COVID-19, he was unable to interact with any current New York players in the dugout. There were also noticeable boos from the crowd for managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman during the 33-minute ceremony, due in part to the Yankees slide in the second half of the season, where they are currently stuck in a 4-14 rut.

The jersey retirement ceremony was New York’s first since 2017, when Derek Jeter’s No. 2 was honored. During his roughly eight-minute speech, the 59-year-old O’Neill – now a popular team announcer – thanked the fans numerous times.A four-time World Series champion as a Yankee, O’Neill was nicknamed “The Warrior” by late owner George Steinbrenner. Said O’Neill: “The fans remember the teams that win and we won. And we won a lot.”

O’Neill hit .303 with 185 homers and 858 RBIs for the Yankees from 1993 to 2001. He was a four-time All-Star with the team and won the 1994 AL batting title during a strike-shortened season. He wore No. 21 for his entire big league career, starting as a rookie with the Reds in 1985. Former trainer Gene Monahan was present at the ceremony along with O’Neill’s teammates Tino Martinez, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera. There were also brief video messages from Jeter, Joe Torre, David Cone and Don Mattingly, along with a message from Roberto Clemente Jr., the Hall of Famer’s son and a former Yankee Spanish-language announcer.

O’Neill stood next to his wife and family to unveil his retire number in Monument Park and was brought on to the field in a golf cart as highlights played on the videoboard – including his final home game in Game 5 of the 2001 World Series and his running catch to end Game 5 of the 1996 World Series.

Ryan Gosling rumored to be joining Margot Robbie in new ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ film

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to join Margot Robbie in the ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ reboot film for Warner Bros.  The new movie will be helmed by Jay Roach, with Robbie producing with Tom Ackerley and Michelle Graham. Details are being kept under wraps, but rumors say it will be an original Ocean’s Eleven tale that is set in Europe in the 1960s.  The project has not been greenlit, but is expected to begin production in Spring 2023.

The Ocean’s Eleven franchise was launched in 2001 when Steven Soderbergh directed the comedy featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and others. That remake of the 1960 Rat Pack movie turned into a successful franchise, with the first movie earning over $450 million worldwide theatrically and two more installments being released in 2004 and 2007. The franchise returned in 2018 with Ocean’s 8, a female-led spinoff featuring Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter and Rihanna.

Gosling also currently teaming up with Robbie on the live-action Warner Bros. film Barbie. The actor also co-stars with Emily Blunt in director David Leitch’s stuntman action-drama The Fall Guy for Universal Pics.

Blackpink drop the video for their new song “Pink Venom”

K-pop girl group Blackpink have shared the video for their lead single “Pink Venom” taken off their forthcoming sophomore LP Born Pink. You can take a look at the video for Pink Venom here.

Born Pink is set to drop on September 16 via YG Entertainment. Blackpink’s upcoming record arrives two years after their debut, The Album, which included the Selena Gomez collaboration “Ice Cream.” The album release was revealed along with news of the group’s upcoming world tour.

Tthe members of Blackpink—Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé—discussed their songwriting process in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. Said Jisoo: “We don’t just receive a completed song. We are involved from the beginning, building the blocks, adding this or that feeling, exchanging feedback—and this process of creating makes me feel proud of our music. If we just received pre-made songs, it would feel mechanical. I feel more love for the process, because we say, ‘How about adding this in the lyrics? How about adding this move in the choreography?” Rapper Jennie added: “I don’t think hip-hop is just about rapping. Look at Rihanna, she could make anything hip-hop. Hip-hop means something different to everyone. To me, it’s the spirit of cool—vibes, swag, whatever words you can use. I think Blackpink’s hip-hop is something the world hasn’t seen before. We, four girls in their twenties from different backgrounds, are using Korean and English to weave pop music with a hip-hop base. Maybe if the really cool rappers in America, who do “real hip-hop,” look at us, it can seem a little like kids doing things. Our hip-hop isn’t the rebellious kind, but we are doing something very cool. What hip-hop is this? I don’t know! It’s just cool!”
