PGA Tour suspends 17 golfers, including Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson, who are competing in LIV Golf Invitational Series

The PGA Tour announced on Thursday that they have suspended 17 players who are competing in the first event of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series this week near London, after it warned of potential discipline. Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Kevin Na, Talor Gooch, Sergio Garcia, Matt Jones, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Hudson Swafford are among the Top 100 players impacted by the ban from PGA Tour play.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan released a memo on the disciplinary measure, saying in part: “We have followed the tournament regulations from start to finish in responding to those players who have decided to turn their backs on the PGA Tour by willfully violating a regulation.” Monahan noted that “the same fate holds true for any other players who participate in future Saudi Golf League events” in violation of PGA Tour regulations, which could potentially impact Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed, who are expected to join LIV Golf later this season.

LIV Golf released a statement hours later and called the PGA Tour move “vindictive,” adding: “It’s troubling that the Tour, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities for golfers to play the game, is the entity blocking golfers from playing. This certainly is not the last word on this topic. The era of free agency is beginning as we are proud to have a full field of players joining us in London, and beyond.”

LIV Golf Invitational London teed off Thursday and runs through Saturday at the Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead, England. The suspension also bars the players from the Presidents Cup and other tours sanctioned by the PGA Tour, in addition to this season’s primary tournaments.

90 women, including U.S. gymnasts, file claims against the FBI for $1 billion in damages in Larry Nassar case

Some of the biggest names in U.S. gymnastics are among the 90 women to have filed federal tort claims against the FBI, demanding $1billion in damages for their mishandling of the investigation into former Olympic team doctor Larry Nassar.

Nassar, a longtime U.S. Olympic team doctor who worked at Michigan State University, faces charges that he abused the women after sexual abuse allegations were first reported to the FBI.  Gymnast Maggie Nichols, a Team USA member, alleges that ‘the FBI knew that Larry Nassar was a danger to children when his abuse of me was first reported in September of 2015.  For 421 days, they worked with USA Gymnastics and [the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee] to hide this information from the public and allowed Nassar to continue molesting young women and girls. It is time for the FBI to be held accountable.’

Olympic gymnastics medalists Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman are also among the women who filed tort claims against the FBI. In 2018, a Michigan judge sentenced Nassar to 40 to 175 years in prison after he was convicted on seven counts of felony criminal sexual conduct while treating Olympians and other young gymnasts and athletes.  The Justice Department announced last month that it would not bring charges against two former FBI special agents who failed to properly investigate allegations that Nassar sexually abused athletes under his care.

‘Ted Lasso’ star and writer Brett Goldstein confirms Season 3 will be its last

Ted Lasso star and writer Brett Goldstein confirmed that Season 3 will mark the end of the hit Apple TV+ series.  Goldstein told told U.K.’s The Sunday Times when asked if the show would conclude in the third season:  “We are writing it like that. It was planned as three. Spoiler alert: everyone dies.”

Goldstein’s comments are consistent with what co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis said back in 2021, when he envisioned the series ending after three seasons. Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly: “The story that I know is the one that I wanted to tell, and so that’s the one we’re telling with the help of numerous people in front of and behind the camera. So it’s by no means me typing every key stroke and saying every word. It’s nowhere near like that. But the story that’s being told — that three-season arc — is one that I see, know, and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.”

Ted Lasso, developed by Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, is based on a character Sudeikis originally portrayed in a series of promos for NBC Sports’ coverage of the English Premier League. The series follows Ted Lasso, an American college football coach who is hired to coach an English soccer team in the EPL. The show premiered in August 2020 and quickly turned into a smash hit.

The third season of Ted Lasso is currently in production in the U.K. and is set to premiere later this year.

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle announce joint stand-up comedy show in London

Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle have announced a joint stand-up comedy show in London, set to take place Sept. 3 at the O2 Arena. The controversial comedians have set an age limit at their event, only welcoming guests 18 years and older. Tickets will go on sale for the general public on June 10.

Rock, 57, recently joined Chappelle onstage at West Hollywood’s “The Comedy Store,” where both poked fun at their attacks. Chappelle, 48, was attacked onstage in May while performing at the “Netflix is a Joke” show in Los Angeles. Accused attacker Isaiah Lee, 23, said he was “triggered” by the comedian’s jokes about the LGBTQ community and homelessness, and claims he was inspired to attack the comedian after seeing Will Smith slap Rock at the Academy Awards.

Smith infamously slapped Rock onstage during the televised awards show after Rock cracked a bald joke about the actor’s wife, Jada-Pinkett Smith, who’s openly discussed her struggles with alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes hair to fall out.
