Philadelphia Phillies’ Bryce Harper undergoes thumb surgery; no timetable for his return

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper suffered a fractured left thumb Saturday night against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, taking a 97-mph fastball by Blake Snell to the hand and exiting the game immediately. The Phillies announced that the reigning NL MVP fractured his thumb soon thereafter.  Harper had surgery to repair the fracture Wednesday, and while it was originally expected he would miss six-eight weeks, as of press time the team announced there was no timetable for his return.

The Phillies officially placed Harper on the 10-day injured list on Sunday.  Harper was having one of the best seasons of his career, despite playing since mid-April with a torn UCL in his right arm. He was batting .318 with 15 home runs, 48 RBIs and a .984 OPS. He ranks fifth in the NL in batting average, sixth in on-base percentage (.385) and second in slugging percentage (.599).

R. Kelly sentenced to 30 years in prison for sex trafficking

A federal judge sentenced R. Kelly to 30 years in prison on Wednesday. Kelly was convicted last September of racketeering and violating the Mann Act, a sex trafficking law, including having sex with underage girls.

Kelly was also convicted in a bribery scheme involving a public official to get a fake ID for the late singer Aaliyah, so the two could marry when she was 15 and he was 27. Kelly believed Aaliyah was pregnant at the time, prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memo. Kelly produced Aaliyah’s debut album, titled “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number.” She died in a plane crash in 2001 at 22 years old.

During Kelly’s trial, nearly four dozen witnesses testified for the prosecution, alleging that he preyed upon children and women for his sexual gratification. The singer declined to testify at the six-week trial but could speak during Wednesday’s sentencing hearing. His defense team is asking for less than 14 years in prison, citing Kelly’s traumatic childhood.

Travis Barker hospitalized for pancreatitis due to recent colonoscopy

Travis Barker’s emergency trip to the hospital Tuesday is reported to be due to pancreatitis, which doctors believe to be triggered by a colonoscopy. According to TMZ, sources connected to Barker have confirmed the hospitalization was a result of pancreas inflammation which includes symptoms like nausea, intense stomach pain and vomiting.

The Blink-182 drummer was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife Kourtney Kardashian at his side, after first checking into West Hills Hospital and Medical Center on Tuesday.  Barker’s daughter, Alabama Barker, shared a message through her Instagram story that same day, asking fans to “Please send your prayers.”

The 46-year-old Barker’s medical history involves illnesses like staph infection and cellulitis, which is a bacterial infection that can cause swelling, inflammation and pain. In 2018, he suffered blood clots in his arms, forcing a string of shows from Blink-182’s Las Vegas residency to be canceled. And in 2008, Barker survived a plane crash that claimed the lives of six people; the accident left him with third-degree burns all over his body.

Rina Sawayama releases the new song “Catch Me In The Air”

Rina Sawayama has released a new track titled “Catch Me In The Air,” the second song shared from her forthcoming album, Hold the Girl.

According to Sawayama, the single was written “in-between lockdowns” with Oscar Scheller, Clarence Clarity, Gracey and Stuart Price.  She shared in a press release: “I really wanted to write about this weird relationship with single parents – you do catch each other in the air. I wanted the whole song to sound like it was on an Irish coastline, like a Corrs video. We put in a key change to go into the chorus, at the end of the pre-chorus to make it lift and soar like a bird…This was the first song that Stuart and I worked on together, and it was the most incredible experience. I’m such a huge fan of his work with Madonna and Kylie so it was a dream come true. We would send each other stock images of coastlines, people doing yoga on a pier, meditating in the middle of a field, hay bales, etc. to get inspired sonically.”

“Catch Me In The Air” is the follow-up to “This Hell,” which Sawayama released in May of this year. Sawayama’s second studio album, Hold the Girl, is set to release on Friday, September 2.

Ghislaine Maxwell sentenced to 20 years for aiding Jeffrey Epstein in sex trafficking underage girls

On Tuesday, Ghislaine Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for aiding the late financier Jeffrey Epstein in his sexual abuse of underage girls for at least a decade between the 1990s and 2000s. Following a criminal trial, Maxwell was found guilty last December of conspiring with Epstein – an associate and romantic partner for a period of time — to groom, recruit and sexually abuse minors as part of Epstein’s now-infamous trafficking ring. Maxwell was convicted of multiple charges related to sex trafficking and conspiracy.

Maxwell’s defense team had asked to postpone her sentencing hearing because she was suddenly moved to solitary confinement, arguing that Maxwell’s hearing should be rescheduled since solitary confinement meant she was unable to prepare for it.  Despite reports about her mental state, attorneys said that Maxwell was not at risk of suicide prior to the transfer.

The 60-year-old Maxwell was indicted in July of 2020 and taken into federal custody where she was held without bail for 16 months leading up to her trial. Her arrest came about a year after Epstein died by apparent suicide in his New York City jail cell while facing federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. Maxwell pleaded not guilty to all charges originally brought against her, and was acquitted of one count of enticing a minor to travel across state lines to engage in an illegal sex act. She never took the stand to testify during the trial, saying she felt there was “no reason” to formally defend herself before the court because “the government [had] not proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

LA Lakers’ Russell Westbrook to opt into $47M option for 2022

Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook plans to exercise his $47.1 million player option for 2022. The 33-year-old Westbrook’s decision to opt into the final year of his contract comes a day after the Lakers were reported to have mutual interest in a potential acquisition for Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving. Irving then announced late Monday that he also plans to exercise his $36 million player option for 2022.  The NBA’s contract option deadline is at 5 p.m. EDT Wednesday. The NBA’s free agency period starts at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Westbrook, a 14-year veteran, averaged 18.5 points per game last season – his lowest total since 2009-10. He joined the Lakers last August in a trade from the Washington Wizards, where he had averaged 22.2 points, 11.7 assists and 11.5 rebounds per game in 2020-21 for Washington. He also averaged a triple double for his 2016-17 NBA MVP campaign and the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons when he played for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Serena Williams loses in first-round at Wimbledon against France’s Harmony Tan

Serena Williams returned to the Grand Slam stage at Wimbledon on Tuesday in her first competitive singles match in almost a year, losing a first-round match vs. France’s Harmony Tan in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7).

Williams told a room of reporters after the match:  “Today I gave all I could do, you know, today. Maybe tomorrow I could have gave more. Maybe a week ago I could have gave more. But today was what I could do. At some point you have to be able to be OK with that. And that’s all I can do. I can’t change time or anything, so, that’s all I could do on this particular day.”

It marked the first singles match in nearly a year for Williams, who injured her leg after slipping on wet grass in the first round of Wimbledon last summer. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion who has won Wimbledon seven times, was seeking her first major title since the 2017 Australian Open.

Tan now advances to face No. 32 Sara Sorribes Tormo in the second round on Thursday.
