Daft Punk announces their split after 28 years

After nearly three decades, Daft Punk is calling it quits. French multi-instrumentalists Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo announced their retirement on Monday morning in an eight-minute video dubbed “Epilogue,” shared on their digital media platforms. The group’s longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the split to Variety.

Daft Punk have collaborated with chart-topping artists such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Their 2013 album “Random Access Memories” included the global hit “Get Lucky” featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, which clinched them the Grammy win for Best Album in 2014. Other high-profile collaborations include production on a number of tracks on Kanye West’s critically acclaimed 2013 record “Yeezus,” as well as The Weeknd’s 2016 album “Starboy,” particularly its title track “I Feel It Coming.” Their music has been sampled by a number of popular mainstream artists, including 50 Cent, Nicki Minaj, Will.i.am, Machine Gun Kelly and perhaps most notably in Kanye West’s “Stronger.”

Colorado Rockies OF Ian Desmond opts out for a 2nd straight season

Colorado Rockies veteran outfielder Ian Desmond is opting out for a second straight season, announcing on Sunday on his Instagram account that his “desire to be with my family is greater than my desire to go back and play baseball under these circumstances. I’m going to train and watch how things unfold.”

The 35-year-old Desmond is in the final year of a five-year, $70 million deal he signed in December 2016. He is scheduled to make $8 million this season. Colorado has a $15 million option for 2022 with a $2 million buyout. Last season, Desmond cited a desire to spend more time with his family and to help grow youth baseball in his Florida hometown. He also added the COVID-19 pandemic made the baseball season one that “is a risk I am not comfortable taking.”

On Sunday, Desmond said: “This impacts a lot of people, some positively and some negatively, and I own that. At the end of the day, this weighs on me more than anyone but I’m following my heart and I feel good about my decision.” Desmond added that he’s informed teammates, the coaching staff and front office and they’ve all been “extremely understanding and supportive.”

‘The Muppet Show’ to air with a content disclaimer warning on Disney+

Jim Henson’s classic series “The Muppet Show” began streaming on Disney+ on Friday, but now will come prefaced with an offensive content disclaimer, saying, “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversations to create a more inclusive future together.”

The show, which ran for five seasons between 1976 and 1981, features the new content warning on 18 episodes, including those guest-hosted by Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Debbie Harry and Marty Feldman, among others.

Each episode bears the 12-second disclaimer for a different reason; Cash’s appearance had him singing in front of a Confederate flag, and other episodes had negative depictions of Native Americans, Middle Easterners and people from other cultures. Two episodes from the final season, featuring guest stars Brooke Shields and staff writer Chris Langham, are left out entirely.

Morgan Wallen Dangerous: The Double Album is No. 1 for a sixth week on the Billboard 200 as of Sunday (February 21). The run marks the most weeks atop the list for a male artist since Drake’s Views spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks at the top in 2016.
